Rational Feed

Rationalist:

Deluks917 On Online Communities by Jacob Falkovich – ‘This is part 1 of an interview with my fascinating friend deluks917. It covers online communities, weirdos, freethinkers, and Uyghurs. Stay tuned for part 2 in which we talk about Buddhism, archetypes, superego poisoning, and Moana.’

Politics and Economics:

Metoo Is Good by Ben Hoffman – #MeToo is a surprisingly effective force for good. It shows the coalition against sexual assault is strong in many communities. In addition #meToo has been rather discriminating and has mostly avoided spurious scapegoating dynamics.

On The Constancy Of The Rate Of Gdp Growth by Artir – The GDP growth rate in developed economies has been shockingly constant over time. The author looks at GDP, population, labour force size, capital accumulation and innovation over time. Case studies include: Aircraft speed and Moore’s law. Lots of charts.

Those That Claim To Be Most Concerned With The Eating Of The Economy Often Seem Ill Prepared To Deal With It by Random Critical Analysis – Higher income is a strong predictor of increased healthcare utilization. As society gets richer it is willing to fund astoundingly expensive treatments. A small percentage of the population accounts for a large share of healthcare spending. Its hard to say no to the old, injured or chronically ill. The author makes an extremely detailed argument that this is the fundamental longterm driver of healthcare expenditures.

  1. Hey, I’ve been following this feed regularly for the past 6 months and never commented, but I was recently reminded small gestures of positivity and gratefulness cost little but generate a lot of good.

So here’s to you! Thanks for making this feed, I love it, follow it, and it’s saved me tons of time and opened my mind to a bunch of topics I wouldn’t have come across otherwise.
